The progressive actions taken today will help ensure we can deliver on our 2035 Sustainability Goals and meet the water and power needs of today's customers and future generations. Our goals, originally approved in 2019, are evaluated every five years to make sure they continue to meet the evolving needs of the Valley. In March 2024, we established new, more ambitious targets, including a goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. See SRP’s revised goals

Did you know?
SRP is on track to reduce carbon emissions by 82% by 2035 and reach net zero by 2050. We currently have more than 3,000 megawatts of carbon-free resources serving our customers.
SRP’s sustainability goals directly support our mission to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable water and power, and our vision of creating a secure water and clean energy future that allows Arizona to thrive for generations to come.
SRP operates infrastructure with long lifespans and plans decades ahead. Our Sustainability Goals help anticipate and address challenges such as growth, extreme weather, drought, and evolving customer needs.
SRP’s Sustainability Goals also support responsible stewardship. SRP depends on shared natural systems—watersheds, fuel resources, and the environment—and has a role in using those resources wisely. Reducing waste, lowering emissions, and protecting water supplies help ensure that those resources remain available for future generations.
We currently have 18 sustainability goals which are focused on five priority areas:

- Customer & Grid Enablement
- Customer & Community Engagement
Key goals include:
- Reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by generation (per MWh) by 82 percent from 2005 levels by 2035 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 (for retail energy).
- Deliver over 4 million MWh of annual aggregate energy savings through energy efficiency by 2035.
- Achieve a 30 percent reduction in generation-related water use intensity across all water types from 2005 baseline.
- Increase SRP's leadership role in forest restoration treatments through partnerships, influence, education, and support for industry to thin 800,000 acres by 2035.
The goals were first approved by SRP’s publicly elected Board of Directors in 2019 and were shaped by input from SRP’s customers and community through a robust stakeholder engagement. SRP committed to reviewing the goals every five years with stakeholder input to ensure they are still meeting the needs of our customers and communities. The first set of updated goals was adopted by SRP’s Board in 2024 and included several changes, ensuring that the goals remain relevant and impactful.
SRP plans in five-year increments to stay on track toward achieving our 2035 Sustainability Goals and to adapt to changes that may affect our progress. We report our progress annually: the Sustainability Report offers annual progress for each goal, while the 5-year Action Plans provide detailed insight into how we plan to meet each five-year milestone, including the initiatives planned for the upcoming year.

A grid that's built to last
Looking through the lenses of reliability, affordability and sustainability, SRP completed the Integrated System Plan (ISP), a holistic plan for how to build the grid of the future in partnership with community stakeholders.
Our ISP has three overarching goals:
- Create a plan to grow SRP's energy generation through 2035.
- Continue keeping costs affordable for our customers.
- Meet or perform better than our 2035 Sustainability Goals.
The ISP will help us meet the evolving needs of our communities so that we are prepared to serve the Valley today and for many years to come.

Looking through the lenses of reliability, affordability and sustainability, SRP completed the Integrated System Plan (ISP), a holistic plan for how to build the grid of the future in partnership with community stakeholders.

Five pillars of sustainability
Carbon Emissions Reductions
SRP is committed to cutting our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions — the primary greenhouse gas — in every aspect of our business, from power generation to our day-to-day internal operations.
Our goal is to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted by generation (per MWh) by 82% from 2005 levels by 2035 (~284 lbs./MWh) and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
We measure carbon emissions following industry best practices and using a protocol developed by The Climate Registry
(TCR). We use a system of measurement known as “carbon intensity.” This metric enables SRP to reflect on and compare impacts to our carbon footprint as resource mixes and customer demands change over time.

SRP was born out of the need to maintain a safe, reliable and resilient water supply. And it’s a mission to which we are still fully dedicated.
SRP manages two watersheds (Verde and Salt) comprising 8.3 million acres, seven dams and over 131 miles of canals to ensure water resiliency and an adequate supply for future use.
Our goal for 2035 is to lead efforts in water storage and drought resiliency by storing at least 1 million acre-feet of water supplies underground and pursuing the long-term viability of increasing beneficial use during flood events by up to 100,000 acre-feet.

SRP is reinforcing our efforts to promote a sustainable supply chain and reduce waste. By managing our product choices and employing thoughtful purchasing strategies, we can meet and exceed sustainable best practices.
SRP is already a leader in this area and is routinely recognized for our efforts in recycling, reusing and repurposing operational waste materials to keep them out of landfills.
One goal we have in this area is to send 75% less municipal solid waste to the landfill by 2035 and 100% by 2050.
Supply Chain and Waste Reduction
SRP is reinforcing our efforts to promote a sustainable supply chain and reduce waste. By managing our product choices and employing thoughtful purchasing strategies, we can meet and exceed sustainable best practices.
SRP is already a leader in this area and is routinely recognized for our efforts in recycling, reusing and repurposing operational waste materials to keep them out of landfills.
One goal we have in this area is to send 75% less municipal solid waste to the landfill by 2035 and 100% by 2050.
Customer and Grid Enablement
One of our goals for 2035 is to support the adoption of 1 million* electric vehicles (EVs) in SRP’s service territory and manage 90% of EV charging.
SRP will continue to ensure the reliability, flexibility and security of our grid through innovative applications, optimizing existing resources, and robust monitoring and analytics. This will enable customers to take advantage of advanced technologies and energy solutions.
