Lighting accounts for roughly 10% of a home's overall energy usage, costing the average SRP residential customer $135 per year in electricity.* A great way to save energy and money each month is to upgrade those old incandescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) to LEDs.
Why switch to LED bulbs?
In a word: Savings.
LED lightbulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 35 to 50 times longer, saving you up to $166 over their lifetime compared to standard incandescent bulbs.1
In fact, by replacing your home's five most frequently used lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR® LEDs, you can save $75 per year!2
There are also some unexpected benefits of LEDs:
- They keep rooms cooler. LEDs use 95% of their energy as light instead of heat.
- They attract less insects. Incandescent bulbs and CFLs attract bugs by emitting too much ultraviolet (UV) light or infrared radiation. LEDs, on the other hand, emit very little.3
- They offer a spectrum of color. LEDs come in a variety of shades, including natural white, warm white, daylight white and even color-changing bulbs that you can control from your smartphone.
- They can be smart. With smart bulbs, you can control the lighting around your house with just a few taps on your smartphone – or by using your voice with an Amazon Echo or Google Home device.
- Plants love them. LEDs give off almost no heat and provide more direct light, making them great grow lights for indoor plants. They can also be programmed to simulate the color temperature of sunlight while also producing the red and blue band spectrums needed for growth and flowering.4
- They’re better for the environment. If every American home replaced just one incandescent bulb with an LED, we would collectively cut enough greenhouse gas emissions to equal that of about 800,000 cars!5
Be sure to recycle your old CFLs
CFLs contain mercury, so it's important to dispose of them properly after you upgrade to LEDs. SRP partners with retail locations around the Valley for CFL recycling. Use this map to find the nearest recycling location:
